Ride the horizon
These four lines are not trophy kilometres. They are instruments: the bike keeps you on the raised ground, at the height where water, grass and farm traffic share a rule.
Regional trains to Wunstorf or Nienburg remain the clean start. Hire locally if you did not bring a bike; the terrain does not require a mountain model. What it requires is a mudguard after a wet week and a willingness to be slow when gravel begins. vantacd writes distances as round figures because the interesting variable is weather, not a sports computer.

The canonical circuit of Steinhuder Meer. Stops: harbour edge, a swimming meadow, the quieter north-east toward the moor. Best from May to September; in December it is a graphic ride with few services open. Surface is the dike path — shared, mostly kind, occasionally sandy at edges.

A day’s excerpt of the river line described in the flood meadow essay. Stops: a dike bench, a bakery in town, a gate where you wait for cattle. Avoid flooded foreland after heavy rain. Season: Silver July for long light; Bronze September for fewer riders.
~18–28 km · 2–3 h · dam gravel / asphalt · Dümmer
Shorter, birdier, more exposed. Built around Dümmer See. Stops are hides and villages, not beaches. Carry the layer you would take on a boat. Pair with the bird calendar so you do not arrive in the one week the roost is stressed by crowds.
~35–45 km · 3–4.5 h · forest gravel + dike · Rehburg to lake
The contrast ride: canopy of Rehburg-Loccum, then the slap of open sky toward the water. After rain the forest section is the slow part. This is the day you remember that “flat northern Germany” still has roots and sand.
