What a cookie is, and what we actually use

A cookie is a small text file placed by a website on your device. Local storage is a related browser mechanism that can hold a short string without sending it on every request. vantacd’s public guidebook does not run advertising cookies, social plugins that drop trackers, or analytics suites that fingerprint readers. The visible banner exists because European rules still expect a clear choice when any preference is stored beyond the strictly necessary delivery of HTML, CSS and images.

The consent banner

On the first visit you see a bar at the bottom of the viewport. The button labelled “Accept all” calls a script function that writes the key cookie_notification with the value allow into local storage and then hides the bar. A matching denial function writes deny and also hides the bar. Both outcomes are functional: they remember only that you have answered, so the bar does not return on every click through the essays. The script lives in ./build/bundle.js. No other marketing flags are set by that button.

Technically necessary delivery

To show pages, your browser requests documents, the compiled stylesheet, the shared script, the favicon and images under ./media/. The host may set a session cookie that is essential for load balancing or TLS. vantacd does not use that channel to measure editorial interest. Forms that post an email to signup.php send only the field you type; they do not attach a tracking cookie.

Google Fonts

Typefaces are requested from Google’s font service. That request is not a vantacd cookie, but it is a third-party connection. If you block it, the layout still works with fallback fonts. vantacd describes the privacy effect of that connection in the privacy policy. Choosing “Accept all” does not enable extra font tracking beyond what the font request already implies; it only stores the banner preference.

Storage period and how to reset

The cookie_notification value remains until you clear site data for vantacd.world or until your browser evicts local storage. To see the banner again, delete local storage for this origin in your browser settings, or use developer tools to remove the key. vantacd cannot remotely erase a value that lives only on your device.

Legal bases

Strictly necessary storage for security and transmission relies on Article 6(1)(f) GDPR and, where the German Telemedia and telecommunications framework applies to essential cookies, the corresponding statutory permission. The banner preference is stored after you press the control, which vantacd treats as consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR for that single key. You can object to non-essential storage by not pressing accept and by leaving, or by using denyAllCookies if a later interface exposes it. Newsletter consent is separate and is described in the privacy policy.

Children

The guidebook is written for adult travellers. vantacd does not aim to store preferences for children. If you believe a minor has submitted an email address, write to info@vantacd.world so the entry can be deleted.

Changes

If vantacd later adds audience measurement or embedded maps that set cookies, this note will name the tools, the retention and the opt-out before those tools go live. Until then, assume a quiet site: essays, a functional banner memory, and the ordinary technical processing of a hosted page.
